Introduction

JAvalon is a java based web client for the Avalon multiplayer world. It is designed to enable you to easily log into Avalon and enable you to start playing as quickly and as easily as possible. It has a number of features that enhance your playing experience and ensure ease of use.

The client is very easy to use. All that is required is to fill in the form on the login page, and the client will automatically log you into Avalon. Please be patient after submitting that form, while the applet is loaded over the net. This can take upto a few minutes, if you have a particularly slow network connection. Any text received from Avalon will be displayed in the black main window. Any text you enter is into the blue line at the bottom of the display. When you hit enter, the text is echoed into the main window, and any response from Avalon is shown there.

Requirements

The JAvalon client requires any java capable web browser. The preferred client is Netscape or Internet Explorer versions 4. Although it will work just as well with version 3 of either browser.

Features

  • Separate windows for input and output
  • Command history
  • Scrollback facility
  • Function key macros
  • Keyboard shortcut keys
  • Automatic character creation and login
  • Online Timer
  • ANSI colour display
  • Graphical display for mana and health
  • Graphical display for defences in Avalon

Keyboard Shortcuts

The client has a number of keyboard shortcuts. These are:

Control-F Bring up the function key definition window
Page Up Scrollback one page
Page Down Scroll down one page
Up Arrow Go back up the command history
Down Arrow Go down the command history
Esc Dismiss function key window/Erase text on command line
Control-U Erase text on command line

Function keys

JAvalon enables you to set function keys for commonly used commands. This is done in the function key definition window (Control-F). Displayed in this window is a list of function keys and their current definitions. If this is the first time this window is viewed, then all the definitions will be empty. In order to define a function key, click on the text box next to it.

The text box will change colour from grey to white. You can then type in whatever it is you wish to set that function key to. You must then hit the enter key to commit changes. Note that if the function key definition window is closed before a key has been committed, then the key will retain its old value. The following example will demonstrate how to set F2 to send a 'drink blue potion' command.

  • From the main applet, select control-F to bring up the function key window.
  • Click on the grey box next to F2.
  • Type 'drink blue potion' (without the quotes), then hit enter
  • Hit esc to close the window or close it with the mouse.

Now every time you press F2, you will drink your blue potion. If at any point you wish to change this to something else, then simply repeat the above, and type in the new command.

If you wish to chain multiple commands, then use :: (two colons, no spaces in between) to separate each command. The following example will demostrate how to set F3 to send 'get blue potion from sack', 'drink blue potion', 'put blue potion in sack'.

  • From the main applet, select control-F to bring up the function key window.
  • Click on the grey box next to F3
  • Type 'get blue potion from sack::drink blue potion::put blue potion in sack' (without the quotes), then hit enter.
  • Hit esc to close the window or close it with the mouse.
