Mercinae, the City of Light

The City of Mercinae is circumscribed by the ancient forests of the south central portion of Avalon. Surrounded by the forests, sea and rugged mountains, Mercinae has been a harbour for those who combat the forces of darkness. The city has always been a bastion for the ideals of truth and justice, assuming a relatively more peaceful posture towards the other cities. Its citizens are followers of morality and honour, governed by a barony which is constantly aware of both its desire to keep peace and Mercinae's ability to staunchly defend itself.

The city hosts the temples of many Gods, bar those that would bring darkness upon them. It is built around the banks of the river Leithe and its main park, known as Park Elienna, pin-points its centre with a glorious expanse of unspoilt woodland and the temple of the god of life. Mercinae has its life-long enemies, however, most notably the city of Thakria and the guild of Sorcerers, and as a precautionary measure it has erected an impenetrable wall around its entire body, accessible only from its eastern, northern and small river gates.

Founding History

Mercinae was founded by refugees from the sacked city of Ilmarael some seventy-five years before the divine war. Mercinae spans the mouth of the River Leithe and has a long coastline along the Southern Sea. The city is built mostly on the western bank but a few of its guilds, its cathedral and its amphitheatre are to be found on the more wooded east bank.

Recent History

Mercinae is the oldest of the modern cities and its present era began at 800ADW.

Skirmishes, Battles and Wars

At 0ADW was the successful defence of new Mercinae against the evil hordes in the last Avalon war to involve both gods and mortals. From that day until this, a peace, sometimes uneasy, has remained with the city. The future is unwritten.

Words from The Barony

Mercinae has always stood as a bastion for the ideals of truth and justice. Built around the banks of the river Leithe, it borders the Southern Sea to the south, and the mountains of Thaumacie to the west. Mercinae's history has remained relatively peaceful, yet its citizens show the ability to fight like lions when attacked. Traditionally Mercinae has allied with the dwarves of Thaumacie to keep the Black Sun at bay, and with the Rangers to keep the denizens of the Goblin City in check.

Mercinae's main marketplace is named Cassiandora Square, in honour of its captured queen. Nearby is Park Elienna, temple of Aldaron, the god of life- a welcome area of natural beauty in the centre of the bustling cityport. Other Mercinae landmarks include the gambling halls, the council tower on Tooth Island, the seafront temple of the goddess of the sea, and the docklands on the east bank. Mercinae also sports a good selection of guilds and has temples to many of the gods, save those who would bring darkness upon them.

Temples

Genesis, the god of time
Location: Head to the west of Cassiandora Square and go slightly further west onto Sage Way by the Royal Bank. Turn quickly northwest still along Sage Way and the god of time's temple lies just to the northeast.

Lycoris, the god of light
Location: The crystalline temple of the god of the light is just to the east of North of Cassiandora Square.

Aldaron, the god of life
Location: Go to the far south of Cassiandora Square and head roughly eastish until you reach the Moon Inn. Then take a short walk south into Moon Street and immediately east into the park. The god of life's temple is in the eastern region of the park.
